Dr. Allison Fitzgerald is a marine ecologist specializing in urban estuarine systems. The work in the Fitzgerald Lab examines concepts and projects related to community ecology, climate change, urbanization of estuaries, and living shorelines. Students gain hands-on experience in field research by going to various research sites in NJ and NY, working on oyster restoration, living shoreline installations, salt marsh dynamics, and species identification of invertebrates in the estuary. Lab techniques are refined using microscopy to identify organisms to species level. The Fitzgerald Lab works with many community partners, and is dedicated to community engagement, education and outreach.
